Meeting Minutes
19:00 Tuesday, January 13, 1997
Energy Center 723
Note: The kit building session seems to have been canceled.
- Call to Order
- Reading of Last Month's Minutes
- Old Business
- Club room
CEC S-2 is slowly emptying of its stuff. We are filling space as it
becomes available. CEC penthouse almost empty, just some backup
microwave links left.
- Money
We have approximately $400 with more trickling in, especially from dues.
- New Business
- Look in QST for news about us in the Section reports.
- The January VHF contest is Saturday. Traditionally it has the lowest
participation of any VHF contest due to the weather. However, members
have conspired to operate from the comfort of the EC 15th floor.
The contest begins 1900 UTC Saturday and ends 0400 UTC Monday.
We'll be running 6m, 2m, and 440 MHz.
- Pay Your Dues. If you last paid your dues in Spring of 1997,
then it is once again time to fork over $15. Check the
membership web page: if your line is
greyed out, then you owe dues.
- Next December we may have an opportunity to sell some really nice
poinsetta plants to raise funds.
- Tech License Class
We are off to a good start with at least 21 participants this year.
We have an opportunity to purchase text books at a reduced and sell
them at $1 below retail, leaving a few dollars for the club to help
offset other class expenses. All members are invited to stop by
the class to answer questions or just be friendly.
- Discussion of Field Day
The idea of a joint field day with SCARS was discussed. Consent was
that we are better off continuing on our own. The idea of moving
Field Day back to the EC roof was discussed. The primary concern
was the inability to publicize. It was decided to abandon publicity
for Field Day (when few students are around anyway) in favor of
creating a public events station during a fall football game. The
idea of holding Field Day in the stadium was also discussed, but the
EC seems more likely.
- Repeater Link Opportunities
Previous suggestions of creating more repeater links have been explored.
Dedicated lines are possible but not practical. Instead, OneNet is
looking into new IP voice capable Cisco products. This would allow
a repeater link to be established at any OneNet hub site. Funding
leverage would come from assisting with storm spotter coverage. We
need to check with NWS to see what is needed. The big problem would
be frequency coordination.
- Meeting Cancellation
It was suggested that, due to the events of last meeting, we need a
formal cancellation policy. A motion was made that meetings shall
not be cancelled without 48 hours notice. It passed by consent.
- Mailing lists
The workings of the mailing lists were discussed. See http://nwc-1.cs.ou.edu/~ouarc/info.html for details. It should be possible to enter more than one address
in your membership record for multiple delivery of announcements. Just
separate them by a space or comma.
- Annoucements
- Don't forget to pay your dues!
- NWS Sever Weather Spotter Class: 7pm March 17th at Moore-Norman Votech.
- NWS Special Event Station W5X celebrating the 50th aniversary
of the first tornado warning will be March 23rd and 24th.
- Thanks to all the folks who helped to raise money with the football
sales.
