Meeting Minutes
19:00 Tuesday, October 7, 1997
Energy Center 723
- Call to Order / Introduction
Once again we broke our attendence record!
- Presentation
Karen and Robert (KD5CAE) Clinton spoke about canine search and
rescue and the Central Oklahoma Search And Rescue (COSAR)
organization.
Dog/owner teams go through extensive training to learn how to
find missing or trapped people in a wide variety of
circumstances. Radio operators are needed to help with
communications during field searches. The "Flanker" position
requires radio training, CPR certification, and a 2.5 day
SARtech training course.
Contact Robert Clinton (KD5CAE) or the club if you are interested
in helping.
- Report on the September VHF QSO Party
We made over 3700 contacts, about 2900 more than last year! Contest
results will be available in a few weeks. Participants who want
to order ARRL participation pins ($5) should contact John KC5VEI
immediately.
- Simulated Emergency Test
The SET will be held this weekend at the Red Cross. Many
bands and modes will be used to practice relaying messages across
and through the state. This is a great opportunity to operate on
a wide variety of equipment to which you might not normally have
access, and you get to practice for emergency communications!
Contact Don KJ5KB for more information.
- Scout Jamboree On The Air
Every year amateur radio clubs open their mikes to scouts and let
them talk to each other across the country. This year it will
coincide with the homecomming football game. If there is local
scout interest, we will probably set up our radios at the T-Shirt
booth.
- Red Cross Shelter Excercise
The Norman Red Cross will practice setting up an emergency shelter
on Saturday November 22nd from 09:00 to about 13:00. Amateur radio
operators are needed to provide and practice RC communications
support. If you are interested, contact Don Byrer KJ5KB.
- 1998 UOSA Budget
It looks like we will get about $400 for next year, $240 for Office
and General Expenses and $160 for Programs, Events, and Activities.
Thanks go to John KC5VEI and Jared KB5PSP who helped convince the
budget committee that we are worthy of a funding increase.
- 1997 UOSA Budget
Once the last few reimbursement checks from field day go through,
we will have spent all of our 1997 UOSA money.
- T-Shirt Sales
The next home game is the homecomming game on October 18th starting
at 11:30. Setup for T-Shirt sales will start at 07:30. As noted above,
the scout Jamoree On The Air may coincide with this game. Homecomming
brings out a lot of alumni who may be former club members. We will
have a guest book to keep track of them all.
- New Tent
John bought a new pavillion tent, one that will actually stand up in
a breeze! It's a fully self supporting 10' x 10' structure that cost
about $70.
- 10 / 10 Day
This Friday there will be gobs of 10m traffic as hams participate in
this annual celebration of the 10 meter band. There is excellant
propagation right now so there will be great DX opportunities.
Equipment will be available in the Red Cross radio room if you
participate in...
- Red Cross Radio Room Cleanup
The RC radio room needs work before the SET. Don will be there
Wednesday evening from 16:10 to about 20:00 and Friday from
16:00 to 20:00. If you are interested in helping (and/or want to
get on the RC 10 meter rig for 10/10 day) contact Don KJ5KB.
- RS 12 Change
Radio Sputnik 12, an amateur radio satelite, now uses a 2 meter
SSB uplink and a 10 meter SSB downlink allowing anyone with a
Tech license, a 2 meter SSB transmitter, and a 10m receiver to
work this repeater in space. Talk to John KC5VEI for more information.
- Purchase of New Class Tapes
Because of the recent modification to the technician class license
requirements, our old class tapes have become obsolete. John proposed
buying new tapes for $99 to bring us up to date. The motion passes
by consent.
- QSL Cards
After much rambling discussion, a committee was formed to do something
about getting some for the club. Contact Jared KB5PSP if you have
design ideas.
- November Sweepstakes and the Collegiate Challenge
Yet another ARRL contact contest. This one takes place across two
weekends. The CW portion will be the first weekend in November and
the phone portion will be the third weekeend. Each portion will run
from Saturday afternoon through Sunday. The object is to work the
most sections within the US and Canada. Within this is a sub-contest
called the Collegiate Challenge in which various college clubs compete
amongst themselves. Jud W5JA has volunteered his station for this
event. Contact John KC5VEI about if you are interested in participating.
- Removal of the Current Treasurer
Nobody has heard from our current treasurer since he was elected last
spring. A 2/3rds majority of the voting members present was required
for his removal. The motion passed 12 to 0.
- Nominations / Volunteers for Treasurer
Brian McDonald KD5BFH volunteered to be Treasurer. He was elected
by consent.
- Enid Ham Fest
On November 1st from 08:00 to 16:00 there will be a Ham Fest in
Enid with just a $2 admission fee and a $1 table fee. John and
others will be going. John will try to sell some of the many
vacuumm tubes that were recently donated to the club by the EE
department.
- Tornado Forecast Special Event Station
The National Weather Service has decided to hold a special event station
from March 23rd through 25th as part of their celebration of the
anniversary of the first tornado forcast. See the
NSSL web page for details.
If you would like to be an operator and see what its like on the
other side of the pile up, contact Peter N5UWY.
- Yearbook Picture
The club picture will be taken sometime between October 13th and
October 24th. Since no preferences for a date or time were expressed,
the secretary will schedule the photo with the yearbook people
and announce the time on the mailing list.
