Meeting Minutes
19:00 Tuesday, September 2, 1997
Energy Center 723
- Call to Order / Introduction
We had a record number of people at our meeting! So many, that we had
a sign-in that I'm not embarrased to show below! FYI, a quorum is
the smaller of ten voting members or a majority of all voting members.
See the Bylaws for more information.
- Reading of Minutes
- September VHF QSO Party
- Starts Saturday September 13th at 13:00 and ends
Sunday September 14th at 22:00. Corrected 9/9/97
- We will be running as "limited multi-operator" from the roof of the
Energy Center. Most of the contest uses single side-band so we need
multi-mode VHF rigs. Last year was a lot of fun and we did very
well. The contest is much more relaxed than field day.
- Don KJ5KB has a VHF antenna that could be refurbished. Don also
volunteered to contact people a few days before the event to find
out when people can show up.
- Club Room
The penthouse of CEC looks good but won't be free anytime soon.
The machine room on the 15th floor of the Engergy Center could
work but only if the key problem can be resolved.
Jud W5JA is going to look into getting space in the Union tower.
Other space in CEC seems to have fallen into the "ice + hell" category.
- Kit Building
- Jud W5JA has some kit specifications including a 1.8 to 22 MHz multi
mode receiver for $49.95 and a W1AW receiver for $29.95.
- Look at www.tentec.com and
www.cshowcase.com
(Radio Adventures)
for kit ideas.
- John KC5VEI has confirmed that we can use one of the
EE labs for kit building.
- A 6m beacon seems like a good idea for gaining club publicity, but
it could take anywhere from 2 months to 1 year to get an assigned
frequency.
- UOSA Renewal
Registered students need to see John KC5VEI to sign our registration form.
- Football Sales
John KC5VEI has arranged for the club to sell OU souveniers at football
games. On a typical day, this could earn $100 to $150 for the club as
well as generating strong publicity and contacting many OU ham alums.
This will usually mean manning a booth on the east side of Gould Hall
from 08:00 to 18:00. The first game is this Saturday so
contact John KC5VEI ASAP if you can
help.
- Simplex Net
There has been an OUARC simplex net on 147.470 MHz every non-meeting
Tuesday at 19:00, but John KC5VEI is usually the only one who shows
up. Everyone seems to think the net is a good idea, but has trouble
remembering. Don't make John lonely! Check in Tuesday at 19:00.
This is a good time to discuss ideas between meetings.
- OUARC Discussion List
Likewise, check out the ouarc-discuss mailing list. To subscribe,
send email to majordomo@nwc-1.cs.ou.edu with the following line in
the body:

You can also see an archive of past discussions at
http://nwc-1.cs.ou.edu/~ouarc/Docs/library.html.
- Technical Presentations
We still need more ideas and volunteers to do tech talks at meetings.
At the next meeting, Robert KD5CAE will talk about Search and Rescue
operations. A talk on Satallite radio is tentatively scheduled
for November.
- Code parties and License Classes
Jud W5JA is checking to see if there is interest in code practice parties
or quick license classes prior to the big class in January.
Contact him if you are interested.
- Field Day with SCARS?
Don KJ5KB brought up for discussion the idea of having a combined
Field Day with SCARS, the
Norman area ham club. There was much discussion and most people
seemed amenable provided that some details could be worked out.
There is plenty of time to think about this, so the discussion will
continue.
- Red Cross
- The HF rig at the Red Cross is fixed and will be put back soon.
- New and better furniture has arrived and needs to be moved
into the ham shack. Contact Don
KJ5KB to help out on September 20th around noonish.
- October 11th and 12th will be a simulated emergency test conducted
from the Red Cross ham room. Contact
Don KJ5KB for more information.
- Dues
Annual Dues are prorated on a trimester basis. This means that if you
have not paid your dues since last fall, you owe the club $15. Please
give a check or cash to an officer or mail your dues to
OUARC c/o Sooner Center
900 Asp, OMU, Room 215-A Box 110
Norman, OK 73019-4052
- AES Discount
If you buy something from Amateur
Electronics Supply, give a copy of your invoice to the club
and we will receive a purchase credit of 1% of the amount you spent.
- Technical Presentation -- Intro to Packet Radio
John setup and demonstrated a packet radio station using a very old
IBM terminal, a TNC, and his 5 watt handi-talkie.
