Field Day 1996

The OUARC, along with hams all across the country, hauled our gear into the open to simulate emergency operations and give everyone a chance to try out different modes and contact other hams around the world. Here's the background.

Originally, we planned to operate from the top of Mt. Scott. But complications arose just days before the event that prevented us from setting up there. Thanks to the generous help of the folks in Meteorology, we were able to get permission to operate from the roof of the Energy Center despite the short notice.

Despite a few glitches as the 63 steps from the 15th floor to the roof, W5TC was setup up and on the air by the 13:00. The veterans showed the way and soon had the newbies converted into rabid DXers. The station remained operationaly (though not necessarily concious) for the full twenty-four hours. We logged many pages of contacts, now being tallied, on all the bands from 2m to 40m.

Thanks to everyone who helped setup or just stopped by for moral support!
