In times of disaster, the Red Cross needs experienced individuals to help coordinate relief efforts. The Cleveland County chapter is particularly short on volunteers with radio experience. Traditionally, it is ham radio operators who fill this gap.
To become a Red Cross Communications volunteer you need only attend a 3 hour course, "Intro to Disaster" that provides an overview of the Red Cross, what it does, and how it does it. Then you would coordinate with Marc Adkins, who is in charge of communications for the local RC, and be placed on a call up list for when disaster strikes.
To find out when the course will next be offered, call the Cleveland County Chapter office.
